Glycerine Pressure Gauges for Spitzer SF/SK Silo Trailers
A glycerine-filled pressure gauge is the primary pressure-monitoring instrument in the pneumatic system of an aluminium Spitzer SF or SK silo trailer. During discharge, bulk material — PE/PP granulate or other powdered product — is fluidised and conveyed by compressed air, and the operator continuously monitors the pressure within the silo vessel and the pneumatic circuit. Accurate gauge readings are fundamental to safe discharge management: excessive pressure stresses the vessel and valves, while insufficient pressure prolongs and impedes the unloading process.
The glycerine fill distinguishes this type of instrument from a dry gauge. The fluid damps needle oscillation caused by chassis vibration and compressor pulsation, producing a stable, legible reading while protecting the sensitive internal mechanism from the harsh operating environment typical of bulk material transport. Combined with a stainless steel housing, the result is an instrument that withstands demanding service conditions reliably.
Our range of glycerine pressure gauges is available in stainless steel housings, two face diameters, and two connection types. Beyond standard versions we can supply any pressure range to order, together with a full selection of thread reducers, adapters, and calibrated gauges.
Specifications and Materials
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Type | Glycerine-filled pressure gauge |
| Housing | Stainless steel |
| Available face diameters | 63 mm, 100 mm |
| Connection | Bottom, back (rear) |
| Pressure range (bar) | 63 mm: 0–4, 0–6, 0–10, 0–25, 0–250; 100 mm: 0–4, 0–6, 0–10 |
| Additional versions | Calibrated gauges, thread reducers and adapters |
The glycerine fill acts as a damping medium, reducing the effect of vibration and pulsation on the pointer mechanism. The stainless steel housing resists corrosion and mechanical damage in dusty operating environments.
Sizes and Types
Gauges are selected according to three parameters: face diameter, connection type, and pressure range.
| Diameter (mm) | Range (bar) |
|---|---|
| 63 | 0–4, 0–6, 0–10, 0–25, 0–250 |
| 100 | 0–4, 0–6, 0–10 |
- 63 mm diameter — compact size for tight instrument clusters on trailer pipework.
- 100 mm diameter — larger face for improved readability from a distance.
- Bottom connection — process connection at the base of the housing.
- Back (rear) connection — process connection at the rear of the housing, for panel or board mounting.
The pressure range is matched to the working pressure of the specific trailer installation. Any other range is available to order, and calibrated gauges can be supplied where required by vehicle documentation or inspection procedures.
Compatibility with Spitzer SF/SK Silo Trailers
The glycerine pressure gauges in our range are intended for the pneumatic systems of Spitzer aluminium silo trailers, SF and SK series. Selection involves matching the face diameter, connection type (bottom or rear), and pressure range to the connection configuration of the individual trailer. Where the instrument thread does not match the existing port, we supply thread reducers and adapters from our stock, preserving the original measurement point without modification to the pipework.
For systems requiring documented measurement accuracy, we supply calibrated gauges. The appropriate specification is determined on the basis of the installation parameters of the specific silo trailer.
A practical note on range selection: the gauge range should encompass the discharge working pressure with sufficient margin so that the pointer operates in the mid-range of the scale rather than near its upper limit. A gauge selected with too narrow a range is prone to repeated overloading; one selected with excessive range loses resolution in the working region. For this reason we determine both the range and the face diameter in relation to the actual operating conditions of the specific Spitzer SF or SK trailer.
Common Faults
In practice, the most frequent gauge faults are fogging or yellowing of the dial face and a reduction in the glycerine fill level — both render the instrument unreadable and eliminate the damping function. The other typical failure mode is pointer seizure or deformation following a pressure overload, after which the gauge no longer returns to zero or consistently misreads.
A gauge with a doubtful reading must be replaced — an incorrect pressure indication in a pressurised system is more hazardous than no instrument at all. Where measurement accuracy must be verified, a calibrated gauge is the appropriate solution. Minor leaks at the process connection are generally caused by a thread mismatch and are resolved by fitting the correct reducer or adapter.
It is also worth noting that a glycerine gauge may gradually lose fill over its service life. A visible drop in glycerine level within the housing indicates that the instrument is approaching the end of its serviceable life, even if the pointer still appears to function. Planned replacement at this stage is less costly and safer than waiting for total loss of damping and pointer instability.
