Hose Compartment Keys and Locks for Spitzer SF/SK Silo Trailers
The hose compartment is a locker integrated into the frame of Spitzer aluminium silo trailers (SF and SK series) that carries the pneumatic hoses, couplings, and accessories needed for bulk material discharge at the delivery point. A secure lock prevents equipment from working loose during transit and protects against contamination or theft when the vehicle is parked. As such, the compartment lock is part of daily trailer operation rather than a component of the pneumatic circuit itself.
In practice, trailers of different ages and manufacturers use several common fastening types. To make it straightforward to match a part to an existing compartment, we hold the full range in permanent stock — from butterfly locks and 8 mm square-drive variants through to spike-type and Feldbinder-type fastenings.
We supply hose compartment keys and locks in all common variants: butterfly, external 8 mm square, internal 8 mm square, spike-type, and Feldbinder-type.
Types and Specifications
| Lock type | Description |
|---|---|
| Butterfly | Rotary fastening operated via a butterfly-shaped handle |
| External 8 mm square | Key fits over a protruding 8 mm square post |
| Internal 8 mm square | Key inserts into an 8 mm square socket |
| Spike-type | Fastening opened with a spike-profile key |
| Feldbinder-type | Lock and key in Feldbinder-pattern execution |
Selecting the correct part comes down to identifying the fastening type fitted to a given compartment and supplying the matching key — and, if required, the complete lock assembly.
Sizing and Selection
Keys and locks are chosen primarily by fastening type, and — for square-drive variants — by the direction of engagement:
- Butterfly — a popular manually operated type with a butterfly-shaped handle.
- External 8 mm square — the key slides over a protruding square with a 8 mm side.
- Internal 8 mm square — the key inserts into a square socket with an 8 mm side.
- Spike-type — a spike-profile key operates the lock.
- Feldbinder-type — lock and key in Feldbinder-pattern execution.
If there is any uncertainty about which type is fitted to a specific compartment, sending a photograph of the lock allows us to identify the correct part from the above range without ambiguity.
Compatibility with Spitzer Silo Trailers (SF/SK)
The hose compartment keys and locks in our range are suited to the compartments mounted on the frames of Spitzer aluminium silo trailers in the SF and SK series. Because compartments across different trailer manufacturers are frequently fitted with locks of the same pattern — including the Feldbinder type — we stock the full range of common variants, enabling a match to any compartment regardless of model year or configuration.
Selection involves establishing the fastening type (butterfly, external or internal 8 mm square, spike-type, or Feldbinder-type) and supplying the corresponding key and, where needed, the complete lock assembly.
For fleet operations, standardising lock types across a single trailer or an entire fleet is often practical: when all compartments open with the same key, drivers do not need to carry separate sets, and replacement of lost keys is straightforward. When replacing an individual lock, it is therefore worth considering whether to bring the remaining compartments onto the same type at the same time. This decision depends on the condition of the existing locks and the operator’s preferred working practice.
Common Faults
In day-to-day use, the most frequent issue is a lost compartment key — the solution is either a replacement key matched to the existing lock or a complete lock-and-key replacement. The second typical situation is a lock that has seized or corroded after a season of exposure to road conditions, salt, and dust, leaving the compartment stiff to open or unable to close properly.
A lock that will not close the compartment must be replaced — an unsecured hose locker risks hoses and pipes being lost during transit. When replacing a lock, it is a good opportunity to decide whether to keep the same key type or standardise across the whole trailer.
In winter conditions, a further common problem arises: moisture trapped inside the lock mechanism freezes after trailer washing or precipitation, making the compartment very difficult or impossible to open. Regular maintenance of the mechanism and timely replacement of corroded locks reduces the risk of finding the hose locker inaccessible mid-journey. For this reason, compartment locks are best treated as routine maintenance items rather than components run to failure.
