Safety Valves on Spitzer SF/SK Silo Trailers
Safety valves are a protective component of the pressure system on aluminium Spitzer SF and SK silo trailers. Their function is to release excess pressure whenever the permissible working pressure in the silo vessel or the compressed-air circuit is exceeded. During pneumatic discharge — where air fluidises and conveys the bulk material — a correctly selected, fully functional safety valve protects the tank, fittings, and the operator.
We stock Herose safety valves designed for use in compressors and air pumps, supplied without a protective flange guard. The body is brass, the seal is Viton, and every valve is delivered with a quality inspection certificate, technical documentation, and a standard certificate. Two temperature variants are available: up to 200°C and up to 150°C (the latter with an additional F/K/S certificate).
Selection — thread size (in inches) and pressure setting (in bar) — is determined by the parameters of the pneumatic installation on the specific Spitzer trailer. Given the safety-critical nature of this component, we always base selection on the vehicle’s technical documentation. Safety valves must never be bypassed or blocked; their integrity is checked as part of each periodic inspection.

Sizes and Types
Both variants are selected according to two parameters: thread size (in inches) and pressure setting (in bar). The following types are available:
200°C variant — available types (thread / setting):
| Thread (inches) | Pressure setting (bar) |

| 1 1/4 | 2.5 |
| 1 1/2 | 2 |
| 1 1/2 | 2.3 |
| 1 1/2 | 2.5 |
| 1 1/2 | 2.6 |
150°C variant — available types (thread / setting):
| Thread (inches) | Pressure setting (bar) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2 |
| 1 | 2.3 |
| 1 1/4 | 1.2 |
| 1 1/4 | 2 |
| 1 1/4 | 2.3 |
| 1 1/4 | 2.5 |
| 1 1/4 | 2.6 |
| 1 1/2 | 1 |
| 1 1/2 | 1.2 |
| 1 1/2 | 1.5 |

| 1 1/2 | 2.5 |
| 1 1/2 | 2.8 |
The correct setting for a given Spitzer silo trailer is selected from this range on the basis of the installation documentation — the safety valve setting must correspond to the working pressure of the system.
Compatibility with Spitzer Silo Trailers (SF/SK)
The Herose safety valves we supply are fitted on the silo vessel and on the compressor/air pump of the Spitzer SF and SK pneumatic installation. The design without a protective flange guard is suited to standard threaded connections. The choice of temperature variant (200°C or 150°C) and pressure setting is determined by the operating conditions of the specific trailer and the requirements set out in its documentation.
Because of their protective role, the valve setting must be matched precisely to the system’s working pressure — the valve must open only when the permissible limit is exceeded, not at normal discharge pressure. For this reason, selection is always carried out on the basis of the individual vehicle’s technical documentation.
Common Issues on Spitzer Silo Trailers
In practice, the most typical problem is a leaking safety valve — a hardened or contaminated Viton seal causes a continuous small release of air and a drop in system pressure. A second issue is the disc becoming stuck or gummed up with bulk material residue, preventing the valve from opening at the correct pressure — a dangerous condition requiring immediate replacement.
Safety valves must not be adjusted independently or sealed above their factory-set pressure. During every periodic inspection, their integrity and function are verified; if there is any doubt, the valve is replaced with a new one carrying a quality inspection certificate, selected to the correct pressure setting.
